Our knowledge of any field whose title includes the word dynamics should be constantly expanding. This is because, in particular in motor racing, we approach a complex subject from a base of abysmal ignorance and also because, in a field defined by compromises, knowledge gained in one area can and does modify our thinking in related areas. What follows is not intended to be a step-by-step instruction manual for decreasing lap times of a racing car. Rather it is intended to be a mind-opening exercise- admittedly in a narrow field. If, at the end, the reader has gained a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and a fuller appreciation of the problems the problems of control and response at high force levels, my primary purpose will have been reached. If the reader is then able to apply this knowledge to enhance his enjoyment of motor racing and/or increase his success at it, the book will be a success. |
